Magnesium chloride hexahydrate, also known as water chloride, has a chemical formula of MgCl2 · 6H2O and a molecular weight of 203.3. Colorless crystal, in the form of a column or needle, with a bitter taste and a white flaky appearance. It is easily soluble in water and ethanol, and is prone to deliquescence in high humidity. Hot melt decomposition at 116-118 ºC. Mixing with magnesium oxide and water forms magnesium cement, which is widely used in the production of magnesite materials. React with hydroxides of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals.

Application

Metallurgical industry:
 It is used as an adhesive for manufacturing refractory materials and furnace arms and is a raw material for manufacturing No. 2 flux and smelting magnesium metal.
Chemical industry:
 Mainly used in the production of various magnesium salts, such as magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, firecracker fixative, and also as raw materials for antifreeze.
Food industry:
 It is a protein coagulant. Tofu made with brine (food-grade magnesium chloride aqueous solution) is more tender and delicious than tofu made with gypsum and is also used as an additive in some foods.
Transportation industry:
 Used as a road deicing and snow-melting agent, it has a fast deicing speed, low corrosiveness to vehicles, and higher effectiveness than sodium chloride.
Agriculture :
Can be used as magnesium fertilizer, potassium magnesium fertilizer, and cotton defoliant.
