Phthalic anhydrid E is an organic compound with molecular formula c8h4o3. It is a cyclic anhydride
formed by intramolecular dehydration of phthalic acid. Phthalic anhydrid E is a white solid. It is an
important raw material in chemical industry, especially in the manufacture of plasticizer. Hydrolysis,
alcoholysis and ammonolysis can occur, and anthraquinone derivatives can be synthesized by
reacting with aromatic hydrocarbons. Phthalic anhydrid E is industrially prepared by vapor phase
oxidation of naphthalen E and air at 350 ~ 360 ºC under the catalysis of vanadiu M pentoxid E.
It can also be prepared by air oxidation of o-xylene.
