Tetrahydrofura n (THF) is a colorless, volatile liquid with an ethereal or acetonelike smell and is miscible in water and most organic solvents.It is highly flammable and may thermally decompose to carbon monoxid e and carbon dioxide. Prolonged storage in contact with air and in the absence of an antioxidant may cause THF to decompose into explosive peroxides.

Application

1). THF is an important organic synthetic raw material and is an excellent solvent. It is especially suitable for dissolving PVC, polyvinylidene chloride and butyl anilin e. It is widely used as a solvent for surface coatings, anticorrosive coatings, printing inks, magnetic tapes and film coatings. As a reaction solvent, the thickness of the aluminum layer can be arbitrarily controlled and bright when used for electroplating aluminum liquid.
2). Used as a nylon 66 intermediate
3). Tetrahydrofura n is an intermediate for the synthesis of the pesticide phenbutyltin.

4)In addition, it can be directly used in the manufacture of synthetic fibers, synthetic resins, synthetic rubbers, as well as a solvent for many polymeric materials, precision tapes and electroplating industries. It is also used in the manufacture of adiponitril e, adipic acid, hexamethylenediamine, succinic acid, and butyl. Glycol, γ-butyrolacton e, etc.
5). In the pharmaceutical industry, it can be used to produce coughbalone, progesterone, reciprocin and as a pharmaceutical solvent.
6). The THF is treated with hydrogen sulfide to form tetrahydrothiophenol, which can be used as an odorant (identification additive) in the fuel gas.
7). THF can also be used as a surface treatment agent for synthetic leather.
