Physical features
Nickel oxide is a black to gray mineral, which can also be prepared by chemical methods. Its chemical formula is NiO, which is an alkaline earth metal oxide. At room temperature, nickel oxide is a solid material with a density of 6.67 g/cm. At high temperature, nickel oxide can decompose to produce nickel and oxygen. When heated to above 300ºC in air, it turns gray and turns into α-NiO, and when heated to 900ºC, it can turn into β-NiO .

Chemical property
Nickel oxide has certain acidity and alkalinity. At high temperature, nickel oxide can decompose to produce nickel and oxygen. When heated to above 300ºC in air, it turns gray and turns into α-NiO, and when heated to 900ºC, it can turn into β-NiO. Nickel oxide is insoluble in water and liquid ammoni/a, but soluble in sulfuric acid, nitric-acid, hydrochloric-acid and ammoni/a. When heated to 400ºC in air, it is oxidized to nickel trioxide and reduced to nickel monoxide at 600ºC.

Application

Nickel oxide has many applications:

Battery: commonly used as electrode material, used to make nickel-hydrogen battery and nickel-cadmium battery.
Catalyst: used to prepare various catalysts, such as hydrolytic oxidation catalyst, hydrogenation catalyst, conversion catalyst, etc.
Chemical Polishing Agent: Used to make chemical polishing agent, widely used in surface polishing and ceramic manufacturing.
Others: used for preparing ceramic pigments, coatings, magnetic materials, etc. In addition, nickel oxide is also used for electronic component materials, enamel coatings, storage battery materials, nickel salts, ceramics, glass, magnetic materials, etc.
