Vitamin B12, referred to as VB12, also known as cobalamin, one of the B vitamins, is a class of cobalt-containing complex organic compounds, the trivalent cobalt contained in the porphyrin-like gollinoid ring plane center. It is the largest and most complex vitamin molecule found and the only one containing metal ions. Its crystallization is red, so it is also called red vitamin.

Methylcobalamin vs. Cyanocobalamin

It contains the mineral cobalt, so any form of it is part of the family of "cobalamins."

Both containing a cobalt ion, methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin show similarities in structure. However, their attached molecules differ, making a difference in how the body absorbs them. Cyanocobalamin is more common in supplements because it is slightly more stable and less expensive than other forms of it. The body may also absorb cyanocobalamin better than methylcobalamin, though
methylcobalamin has more retaining power.

Application

1. Improve the utilization rate of folate synthesize methionine (synthesized by homocysteine) and choline together with folate, synthesize cyanocobalamin schenyl precursor substances such as methylcobalamin and coenzyme B12 in the process of producing purine and pyrimidine, and participate in the methylation process of many important compounds. When vitamin B12 is deficient, the activity of transferring methyl groups from methyltetrahydrofolate is reduced, making folate into an unusable form, resulting in folate deficiency.

2. Maintain the metabolism and function of nerve myelin. When vitamin B12 is deficient, it can cause neurological disorders, degeneration of the spinal cord, and can cause severe psychiatric symptoms. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to peripheral neuritis. The early manifestation of vitamin B12 deficiency in children is abnormal mood, dull expression, slow reaction, and finally anemia.

3. Promote the development and maturation of red blood cells. The conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA participates in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, in which succinyl-CoA is involved in the synthesis of heme.

4. Vitamin B12 also participates in the synthesis of deoxynucleic acid (DNA), metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins, and increases the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins.
